If the Earth's rotation slowed down gradually over millions of years, and this is the most likely scenario, it would be a very different story. If the Earth slowed down to one rotation every year, called synchronous rotation, every area on Earth would be in either sunlight or darkness for one year. This would be similar to what the Moon goes through where for two weeks the front side of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun followed by the front side being in darkness for two weeks.

But what if the Earth stopped rotating completely? In that case, one half the Earth would be in daylight for half the year while the other side would be in darkness. The second half of the year it would be reversed. Temperature variations would be far more extreme then they are now. The temperature gradient would affect the wind circulation also. Air would move from the equator to the poles rather then in wind systems parallel to the equator as they are now.

The earth's rotation around the sun is what keeps it at the distance that it is. If it were to stop orbiting the sun the earth would fall into the sun.

That actually will happen,, The velocity of moving of earth around the sun is decreasing and will continue to decrease till it stop completely and at this moment which will last for unknown period,,there will be no day and night,, then it will move again but in the opposite direction,, so the sunset will be from the west and not from east like it now,,, and this will be a sign for the end of the world.

The earth replace into captured and is held in orbit by making use of the sunlight's gravity, it truly is actual, however the momentum of the planet replace into already there. long formerly the sunlight's gravity dies, the sunlight will replace right into a pink extensive, and strengthen out to the orbit of Mars - and Mars and each and all of the plantes orbiting closer to the sunlight, would be swallowed up and vaporized. The sunlight will exist in this state for particularly some million years, then all without postpone give way inward upon ittsself, arising a wonderful sight referred to as a "nova", and over right here couple of thousands and thousands of years, will wade with the aid of a level referred to as a "brown dwarf" (it truly is basically isn't vast adequate to alter right into a "white dwarf") and finally fade out and flow away at the back of a small, dense clump of cloth which in turn will ultimately burn up into the vastness of area and be heard of not extra. Humankind could have long considering the fact that replace into extinct, so no person would be around to witness those outstanding activities.

If we waited long enough, theoretically the earth would lock its rotation to the year and always have one face pointing to the sun. This however won't happen in reality as we will be engulfed by the sun in it's final throes of its life and we won't be there anyway.

What do you mean?

If the Sun's gravity stopped, the Earth would move in a straight line that is tangent to its path.

If the Earth stopped, that is, became stationary relative to the Sun, then it would fall into the Sun.

The sun is also moving through space.. so a halt to the earths rotation would mean we would be left to freeze to death while it traveled away. An impact towards the sun would mean crispy critters.

The earth will then either spiral its way into the Sun or will escape the gravitational pull of the Sun and thus will go out of our sola system. In either case we will cease to exist.
