Third world or not (and I think, by definition, they are still considered 3rd world), Indians seem to have always been happy. I think this is because of their religions and the way they look at life and the world. They are far more passive (generally) than most other cultures, and they have a great respect for life. They are the ones who brought us yoga and meditation, among other things. Furthermore, Buddhism, a very peaceful & pacifist religion, was born in India.
The Indians I've known seemed to have some inner peace. I don't know exactly where it came from -- perhaps it was their religious/spiritual beliefs, perhaps it was their upbringing and culture, or perhaps it was something else. But most Indians I've known have always seemed to have an inner peace, and that, of course, is quite enviable.

Indian is one of the fastest developing countries in Asia after China. The economy is stronger than ever now. And if you travel through India you can see the changes which is taking place.
High quality technical education is the core reason for this growth. And everyone know that Indian software engineers are among the best in the world. Indians no longer treat themselves as a third world country, but as an emerging power who are capable of becoming the 6th permenant member of UN.

The quality of life, for some people in India, has been improving. The population is over 700 million. With that many people, there have to be some who are happy and some who are not so happy. There is nothing to support your belief that, at sometime in the past, everyone was unhappy, and now everyone is happy.

India was robbed by Britishers ages before. India was suppose to be the richest among all countries it was known as"bird of gold"
in olden days, the policy of divide and rule of British ruined India.and now Indians know their worth and the strong base of education in India has shown them a way to the growth and Indians are utilising it on its best.
