Nelson Mandela was branded a terrorist by the aparheid government in South Africa and was found guilty by the courts of a sovereign state. He was sentenced and served his sentence for crimes against the state. 27 years later he was released and is now is the greatest contemporary icon.

Nelson Mandela fought not only against the oppression of apartheid in South Africa, but against the oppression of Europe over Africa.

Freedom fighters and terrorists are those memebrs of society who realise the only way to stop the master kicking the slave is to put him to rest. The master will not give up his oppression unless he is forced to do so.

Those in power call those who struggle for freedom terrorists, those who struggle for freedom call them freedom fighters. But ultimately, it is the writer of history that decides.

Despite the garbage people talk, there is a clear difference. A terrorist purposely targets innocent people. However someone can be both freedom fighter and a terrorist. Or just a terrorist or just a freedom fighter.

A terrorist bombs even if what he is doing is harming his own cause

A freedom fighter changes his strategy to suite his objective

so by this definition Bush is a terrorist for he pounds some place because he needs something to pound

Same is true about Bin Laden and various other religious fundamentalists... they end up killing more of the people they are fighting for than those they r fighting against.

As for freedom fighters... in this madness they have turned peace nicks!!! Gandhian or just lying low till the dust created by the two sets of loonies settles down.

Terrorist are people of any kind of race that want to terrify people that don't think or act or believe the same way they do. They want to be in control and dictate under their own beliefs and ways. I think Hitler was not only a dictator he was also a terroriser. Freedom fighter is someone who fights for moral rights and belief , religion who could be happy without freedom of choice? That is what this war is all about, Evil (terrorist) against Good (freedom fighters)

Terrorists are funded by the US military industrial complex; Freedom Fighters are funded independently. Al Qaeda and the Taliban started off as Freedom Fighters back in their salad days as the mudjahudden fighting the Soviets. Then the CIA got a hold of 'em and they became terrorists.
Trust me...in five years once the America we all know has become an unrecognizable police state, it won't be the terrorists who are gettitng spied on and locked up, it'll be the freedom fighters. Think about it.

A terrorist is someone who intentionally targets non-combatants.

A "freedom fighter" is a subjective term for someone seeking to overthrow thier government. Because it's usage is entirely subjective, it is a meaningless label. "Rebel" would be more objective and accurate.

For crying out loud, people, using opinion as definition is the same as talking gibberish. Language is founded upon the idea of mutual understanding, and if you speak in subjective (or perspective-driven) terminology, then you aren't saying anything at all. The only way to have a rational discussion is to use neutral (objective) terms and logical proofs. Stop giving glib answers like "it depends on your opinion", because you could theoretically answer ANY question with such a useless answer!

Am I the only one here who understands the difference between opinion and logic?

Freedom Fighter : Gives life for freedom of his country
Terrorist : Takes innocent lives for want of a country/demands

Freedom fighter is a relativistic local term for those engaged in rebellion against an established government that is held to be oppressive and illegitimate.

Terrorism refers to a strategy of using violence, social threats, or coordinated attacks, in order to generate fear, cause disruption, and ultimately, bring about compliance with specified political, religious, or ideological demands. The targets of terrorist attacks typically are not the individuals who are killed, injured, or taken hostage, but rather the societies to which these individuals belong.
