Technically AMG is not a separate brand as it is a division of Mercedes-Benz. BMW's division that competes against Mercedes-Benz AMG is M. If you are curious about aftermarket brands that alter BMW vehicles, there is Dinnan, Alpina, and Hartage. There is separate brands that alter Mercedes-Benz vehicles (that are not associated with them) such as Carlson and Brabus.

As was mentioned, "M" models are probably closest to M-B's AMG (like "S" and "RS" are for Audi, "V" for Cadillac, etc). But BMW has also entered into a partnership with Dinan for aftermarket tuning. Dinan parts come with BMW's standard warranty (though warranted through Dinan) - http://www.dinancars.com/Warranty.asp. Because of their partnership, some BMW dealers are Dinan tuning centers - http://www.dinancars.com/Dealers.asp.
Other tuners, like Alpina, are aftermarket companies with no relations to BMW. Active Autowerks is another.

As far as I know, Alpina, Hartge, and Dinan are the only companies that distribute BMW aftermarket parts and turn stock BMW vehicles into performance machines. But Alpina and Dinan are strictly BMW tuners; Hartge, I think, may be letting go of BMW by the end of the year.

Yes, it's Alpina - and that's a company totally independent from BMW (not like AMG these days).
