you can use as a workstation networked to your newer computer., with the newer one as the server. you can use it as a telephone answering machine, fax terminal, control your thermostat, even turn your coffee pot on and off in the morining. You can use it to store photos and as a backup for current projects or tax files , rebates and things like that. Things you seldom use but need to keep but not necessarily want to have on your main computer that attached to the internet.

Yes, you can use it for Linux, though running it with a live cd won't work nearly as well as running it from a hard drive.

Uhm, live cd? no! you need about 128 MB for that.
If you can get the ram up to 32MB (the more the better) you can install Ubuntu and run it in GUI mode, it has been designed to run on older computers, although start up times are very slow.
