I think Malaysia is one of the most beautiful country I have ever been to. I lived there for almost 6 years.
As any other countries, there are many aspects to talk about, and below is just purely my personal opinion:
The people are, well, selectively nice to you, depending on your race, accent and which part of Malaysia you are at. In Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and surrounding, people tend to treat the whites better. People of color are treated indifferently, but one thing good about it is that if they tend to treat the whites 'better', you will not see them treating people of other skin 'less', simply indifferent, which is good. Some muslims, especially in the PAS controlled northern states seemed to dislike the whites, but not all.
In terms of their economy, I noticed that Malaysia has a huge middle class group, which I think is good.
In terms of their politics, the so-called racist policies benefiting the Malays have been the most talked about. The way I look at it, while the Malays get more benefits, the policy provides stability in the country. Compared to its close neighbour Indonesia whereby the Malays are not taken care of by the government, civil unrest and jealousy are the consequences, resulting in riots and political instability. While the Chinese/Indian or other race group there complain, I think they fail to see the benefits that this policy has provided them.
I am not gonna comment on how I perceive the Malays in terms of their attitudes and behaviors, but I think the policy has done more good. Mind you I am not Malay.
Food is excellent, no doubt.
Nosy, busy-body, extreme inquisitiveness about one's personal life, rude, and lack of consideration with public facilities are the things I think the national characteristics of city-dwellers Malaysians, cutting accross gender, race, sex, economic status, etc.
I can't comment on people living in 'kampong' as I have never lived in that part of malaysia.

I have travelled to that country alone ever since I was 17 yrs old.
In my young naughty days, I was caught for chatting with the local gal in Terengganu. After the religious police found out that I am foreigner, they explain to me it is wrong (against muslim law), and let me go.
I love the warm simple in the village. The city is happening. people are generally peace loving. But just like any other city, never roam in to dark lane.
Cheap place, nice food, beautiful natural. It will still be my place for short trip relaxation.
By the way, I make it a point to learn some of the local language before going there.

As an American, I lived on an unique island in the Caribbean for decades or so. a customary island for celebs, etc. the celebrities love this island cuz the natives do not pester them, no paparazzi, etc. Myself, I had many complications w/ this island. maximum significantly, those stick out: a million. the way they manage their animals (canines, cats, etc) is merely undesirable. quite inhumane and wretching. One vet on the island and in reality the 'foreigners' used the facilities. Everytime I left my domicile, i replaced into sickened in any respect the flea ridden, ill, 0.5 lifeless, dehydrated animals mendacity round everywhere. 2. Police. Our police would have some severe subject matters, yet there the police are ineffective. merely undesirable. If u have a situation, do no longer plan on utilising the police. A) they don't wanna get entangled. B) you've the acceptance as someone that even calls the police (undesirable!). loved ones Violence? haha Police can not be in contact. Stolen automobile/ or automobile twist of destiny? Ha! Police can not ascertain it out and noone has ins. besides. 3. get unwell and desire medical help? reliable success. The health center is a 2000 sq.. foot ranch and there is one ambulance on the full island. I had abdomen discomfort and went to the health center one evening-- the Dr stated, "it can be gallstones-- i visit take them out for u if u like." 4. The natives, esp. adult men, will grant and attempt to charm u into each busines deal they ever dreamed of. 5. actually everyone appears conscious of really everyone and they seem after themselves first. Gossip is rampant. And gossip on a small island blows speedier than the wind. 6. Water? Hahaha water. there is none except u pay an quite intense correct price- significantly better than our 4.00 gal. gasoline--- so, pray for distinctive rain. No warm showers. chilly ones will be feesible at 5 minutes a bath (and that is one intense priced bathe). i ought to bypass on and on. yet, the experts? not frequently any racism. Love travelers from any usa with the aid of almight vacationer dollar. again domicile" i have realized to savor my water tap grant. I savor that their is a structure and a police stress if u ever desire them. i have realized to perceive a participant, a sweet talker from a mile in the back of me.

I'm a Malaysian & proud of our great nation & its achievements.
We're not perfect but then again who is? It's still a place I fondly call HOME.
We still have the best food (have travelled to some major destinations), cost of living is still reasonable as oppose to London, New York & Tokyo where lifestyles there can really cramp your budget.
Good weather don't have to spend more on dry-cleaning/ on winter clothing.
Aside from the occasional bad drivers/ pedestrians/ motorcyclists... we have to improve on the transportation & roads!
Having said that, we've great shopping & bargains plus we have food & entertainment around the clock.

Food : Malaysia boleh - we got india, malay and chinese foods, and easy to access..and 24-7.While in europe it is difficult to get food after 10, there is no stalls that sell cheap food...
Transportation: In germany the transport are soooooooo punctual - unlesss **** happen - which is opposite of malaysia
security : in europe, the crimes are similar in malaysia- except in germany , i feel pretty save in germany
