Some great answers already given. I think the best childrens books ever written are the ones where the telling is part of the story. So things like The House At Pooh Corner, with all the voices, by AA Milne, the Just-So Stories by Rudyard Kipling, Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat etc by Dr Seuss, Peter Pan - truly great and enduring stories that connect readers - and especially parents - with children and drift the younglings off to dreams that thrill with imagination.

Inkheart and The Thief Lord, those are my faveourites and I read a hell of alot for someone of my age,
Lord of the rings for teens, even though I first read it when I was 7, however the prequall The Hobbit is the best.
Harry Potter, but not the first 1, its too draged out.
For anyone over 5 or 6 The Devil and his boy, I loved that book when I was 6, I read it at school, but I have never been able to find it anywhere else, its history, secrets and farm life all in 1, a great story for any age, if i found it and re-re read it I would probably say it tops inkheart.

My daughter thinks it is the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (C S Lewis). When I was little I loved Charlotte's Web (E B White). Strangely, the only books the that have crossed both our generations (for enjoyment) are The Mr Men series!
