If you type 'removing vocals' into a search engine, it turns up loads of programs to do the job, such as LUXURIOUSITY KARAOKE MUSIC MAKER DELUXE (commercial), Elevayta Extra Boy Pro (commercial) and karaoke anything (freeware), plus articles explaining how it works and how to do it.

A lot of the programs are aimed at people who want to remove the vocals to create karaoke MP3s or CDs.

They work by taking the left and right stereo sound files and subtrating one from the other. The vocals are normally in the middle of the stage, so the left and right tracks both have the vocals at +100% volume level and in-phase. Subtracting left from right is supposed to eliminate them, but the programs don't always do a good job.

The other instruments are to the left or right of the stage, so the left or right tracks don't have the sound at the same level. For example, lead guitar may be at 70% volume on the left track and 30% on the right track. When one is subtracted from the other, there is still some lead guitar sound left. The master volume can be adjusted to get the whole track back to the right level.
