The 'diamonds' present in afterburner exhaust from a jet engine are standing shock waves from interaction with the nozzle and the atmosphere as the exhaust gases exit the engine at supersonic speeds. There is some correlation between the numbers of diamonds seen in the exhaust and the speed of the exhaust gases themselves, but not necessarily the speed of the craft using the engine. Also they are not absolute, in that each single diamond does not represent a 1 Mach speed gradient.

I'm so confused. Why do you dislike the sound bear so much? What did he ever do to you? You know, he's a distant cousin of my daughter's Care Bear. I want a diamond from ajetplanesaftenerexhust. Is that a website? How much do they cost? Are they rare?

learn how to use spell check... or just something.
I am not sure how the heck a diamond would be found in a jets exhaust nor am I sure how it would break a sound bear or any type of animal. A sound barrier maybe...
