This behavior is called "thumping". My gerbil did this whenever a loud noise scared him, or something. They do this instinctively to warn other gerbils of the 'threat'. Often, if you have more than one gerbil they will both do it. This is also part of the mating ritual.

If he's stamping his feet in a very rapid motion, that's typically a warning call to others in the area, telling them to be on the alert. My gerbils, especially my big breeding male, did that usually when a cat or a stranger came into the room.

2. This is a new species of Gerbil, called 'Get-down' Gerbils. You should expect him/her to start dyeing his hair soon, reds, blues and greens, possibly Mohican cut. Strong possibility of piercing. Beware of illegal drug use.

A friend of mine has hamster's and gerbils, She say hers do the same and that its a sign of defensiveness, Trying to ward off predators and enemy.
