The day of dec 25th was chosen as the day to mark the birth of Jesus. It was chosen because it also coincided with wth birth of the pagan god Mithras the "Sun God". They used it to try as usual convert the pagans. Scientists have calculated the time of Jesus' birth around mid may to early june. He was born during the lambing time, and as far as I know there are no barnyard animals that give birth in the dead of winter. Besides the middle east during the winter is bitter cold so I doubt that there were any shepards tending flocks by night (it gets down to 10 degree at night during the winter in the desert).
Pagans celebrated Yule dec.21 or the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, and the "rebirth of the sun". The tradition of celebrating christmas didn't get a start until around victorian times. It was a way to pass the night. Dec.25 is not the sole date that is celebrated either. In Europe (Germany it is not until Jan. 2) when Saint Nicholas arrives. Christmas has no set date by law, religious or otherwise.

Well, going back for many 1000 years, there was some celebration for the darkest day (and also for the lightest day, Southern hemisphere...).
So the old celebration was given a new meaning with the spread of Christian believe. Now Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, according to the bible believed to be God's son.
That's all about...

Christmas is really a pagan holiday that was celebrated during winter. It is the winter solstice. Christians wanted to make their new religion more appealing and therefore accepted by the pagans so they joined this holiday with theirs. The same can be said (unfortunately) of just about all of the christian holidays and symbols ie. Easter and even the birth, death and resurection of a savior (Osirus in Egyptian religion/mythology)? If anyone wants to check out the weather during December when Jesus was supposedly born you will find that no shephards would want to be sleeping outside during this time. And thats the answer for religious minded people. For the rest of you tradition and money. People like nice ideas (such as a baby savior), presents, parties and businesses like people who like to spend money for presents and parties and nice ideas. Christmas is a fun, warm, sugar-coated pagan celebration.
