It has nothing to do with rape, though it can be an activity done during rape. It is not a toy, though it can be accomplished with a toy or even an animal. ER stories about live animals trapped up there are both grotesque and hilarious. Where is PETA when you need them?
It is to go through the back side. Sodemy laws for example target gay males since sodemy apparently is a primary sexual activity for them.
Sodemy between man and woman is just another aspect of sex, though I'd say only approx %30-40 of women enjoy sodemy. This figure has no scientific backing, just a rough guess on my part.
I believe the root word comes from Sodem and Gamorah (sp).

Sodomy is usually used for homosexual anal sex - however any anal sex either involving a toy or otherwise is sodomy. The name came from the city of Sodom refered in Bible which was destroyed. You can read more about Sodom and Gomorrah from:
