my eleven month old son has a 101.1 temperature, and his cold medicine isn't helping. he's never fussy, but he started crying, he's got runny nose and a deep chest cough. can anyone tell my other things to try other than medicine, or if I should take him to the hospital?
oh, and what is the average fever when your supposed to take your baby to the hospital?
I'm really worried, please someone help me quick!

Your baby is OK. I don't know what kind of medicine you are using. Check the ingredients, if it doesn't have acetaminophen listed, on the bottle there is no reason for the medicine to bring the fever down. Start with Tylenol, and use the appropriate dose listed on the bottle or that your pediatrician has recommended. You may repeat Tylenol every 4 hours. If the temp is not down in 2 hours. Start Motrin also. You must alternate these. Do not give at the same time. Motrin may be repeated every 4-6 hours. Look at the bottle. A temperature of 101.1 is nothing for a baby or young child. My pediatrician would not even see my child until he had 104-105. Do not give the child a cold bath but a tepid bath. Not cold but not warm. Dress only in a diaper. No other clothing. Try to force liquids like juice or Pedialite. For the cough, If orange Triaminicin doesn't work, I would try Tussin or Children's Nyquil. My son never responded to the usual children's meds with colds. I had to use the stronger ones Your child does not yet qualify for a Dr. office visit much less an ER visit. Use a vaporizer if you have one. If temp goes over 103 or child won't eat, starts vomiting, has diarrhea then take.

Hi,
Bath him in water with the chill taken off...lukewarm. if it is to cold, the body thinks he is cold and tries to make more heat. So lukewarm...ok. Got any water? Give him as many fluids as he will take. Don't be disheartened if he won't drink, just keep offering. Do you have a vapouriser? Good for the cough. Failing that...steam. Run the hot water and sit in the bathroom... perhaps you could bathe him in tepid and have the steam on from the shower if you have them seperate.
Children that young can fit if their temps get to high. Scariest thing, but they are usually ok. I would not let his temp stay at 101 for to long. At 11 months he could have some baby panadol if you can get any, just make sure it doesn't have a sedative in it. We work in celsius here but I think normal is 37.5... and 39 or 40c is dangerous. http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.htm
I'd take him to hospital. if he didn't pick up. if the medicine isn't working... He is a baby, better to be safe then sorry.

101 fever is very low for a baby/child. The fever is trying to fight the infection. My personal preference is to not treat a fever in my children until it reaches 102.5. Also, when I cannot get a fever down I alternate Tylenol and Motrin since they each lower in different ways. Fevers are also higher at night. Personally I would keep him hydrated, comfort him, but not worry. If he's not better by tomorrow morning or Monday morning take him to his pediatrician, but a 101 fever is not worth the stress an ER visit will cause him.

is the 101 fever oral or rectal? When he coughs does he make a wheezing sound or does it sound like a barking seal sound? Keep the upper part of his body elevated (because of the congestion) while he is asleep..that will help. 101 isn't that bad if its oral. Id keep an eye on it. Do you have any Motrin? if so give him some. If he sounds phlemy (snooty/mucus) when he coughs...cup your hand and pat his back with your hand cupped. This is called percussions and sometimes helps to loosen the phlegm. Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids ...has no diarrhea, and check his diaper and make sure he is urinating.
NO ASPIRIN...Tylenol or Motrin. Aspirin can cause Reyes syndrome if given for cold/flu.
NO HONEY...children under 1 year should never be given honey it carries a bacteria that they cant process.

The deep chest cough is the only item on your list that warrants concern. A temperature of 101 is high, but not abnormally high.. give him tylenol and motrin to reduce his fever and keep an eye on that chest cough.. if it gets worse or if he starts barking like a seal or otherwise seems to be having trouble breathing, then I would definitely take him to the hospital.

It sounds like a pretty bad cold. If you are that worried, definately take him to the hospital. there is no sense in both of you being miserable. As for the person who suggested giving him a teaspoon of honey, while I'm sure they meant well, it is never a good idea to give babies honey for sanitary reasons. I will say prayers for you and your family. Good Luck!

hi bonnie... generally the time to go to the hospital is 102 to 103.... if the acetominophen and ibuprofen (not mixed togethor) are not working, and his fever gets higher, def. go to the hospital. in the meantime, make sure he's breathing regularly and just cuddle with him, make him comfy... my baby bro used to get real bad fevers after his immunizations... 104 degree temps... then we'd just be sittin g in the er all night long, waiting for them to get to us.... do that as a last resort... just make sure he's breathing regularly and watchdog that temp. best wishes.

I wouldn't mess around with a cough...I'd take him to the ER soon. He could develop a nasty case (or might already have) of bronchitis. If I were you, I'd save yourself a lot of worry and take him to the ER.

Give him some infant tylenol, and a cool bath. The cool water should bring down his temp. if the tylenol doesn't work in 30 min or so, or if his temp rises any further, take him to the hosp.
