Are you asking what are the best and cheapest restaurants in the San Diego Zoo, or simply around the San Diego Zoo?
Inside the zoo, probably the best restaurant (and one of the most expensive) is Albert's (in the Treehouse complex next to Gorilla Tropics).
For cheaper eats, check out the Canyon Cafe or the Raintree Grill.
Read all about the Zoo's dining options in the first link:
For restaurants near the zoo, here's my picks:
For best restaurant close to the zoo, check out the Prado restaurant in Balboa Park, next to the San Diego Museum of Art. It is a bit pricey, but nice. For good cheap eats close to the zoo, go across the Laurel Street Bridge (west) and check out some of the restaurants on 5th ave like Max's Deli or Jimmy Carter's Mexican. or go north up to University Ave and try Ichiban or Mama Testa (There's also a McDonald's up there). There's a lot of restaurants within a mile of the zoo. Use the second link and click through the options.

Do you want one available in the zoo? If not and just in san diego then you can try going to yahoo --> travel--> travel guides--> san diego--> restaurants
it gives you eating places by cuisine, with reviews and editor choices too
good luck and have a nice summer

All the burger joints in the Zoo aren't really THAT expensive, but it's standard fast food type stuff it's edible but not haute cuisine. Albert's is really nice, but it's not cheap. Bring a lunch, or go outside for lunch (get your hand stamped) and come back afterwards.

The term "cheap" is relatively. One of my favorites is the Corvette Diner in Hillcrest. It's relatively cheap and very fun. It's not that far from the Zoo either. Check out the link below.

Try the Corvette Diner in Hillcrest. Walking off the meal is fun by looking at the great shops and indie coffee shops.

Sorry, dude but best and cheapest don't go together. You either spend some big bucks for some good food or you go to Burgerking. It's one or the other- best or cheapest- you can't have both.
