Thanks for all your wonderful and detailed answers. I forgot to mention that I live in northern UK where we have a lot of rain, and not much sun. Therefore, would you advise keeping it inside in winter? Just maybe putting it outside when the weather is warm and sunny?
Many thanks

- Light
Aloe vera requires bright light.

- Temperature and Humidity
Aloe vera requires medium temperature and low humidity.

- Soil
Aloe vera grows well in a cactus soil mix.

- Water
Water your aloe vera from spring to fall, but after each watering allow the soil to dry thoroughly before the next watering. Water infrequently in winter.

- Fertilizer
Aloe vera requires very little fertilizing. Fertilize once per year in early spring. Use a cactus fertilizer or any house plant fertilizer. A slow-release fertilizer is best.

- Pests and Diseases
Aloe vera is sometimes affected by mealybugs and root lice. Wash the leaves with lukewarm soapy water. If infestation is severe, spray with Malathion or Diazinon. It is also susceptible to crown rot.

- Propagation
Propagate your aloe vera from offsets in a cactus soil mix.

In Georgia I keep my aloe in full sun. If we have a few days of rain I pull the aloe pot under the porch so it wont get so much water. They are in the succulent/cactus family so let the soil dry out before you water again. They are a wonderful plant to have around if you burn yourself. Just pinch off the end of one leaf and smear the juice over the burn as soon as it happens. Very healing to you- and the plant grows back. Wash your hands well after using cause the juice tastes awful. They like some sand in their soil but I have had successs using pure potting soil.

In cooler climates, the aloe vera can been grown in direct sunlight. In warmer climates, they can also grow in the full sun, but they turn a dirty brown colour. Most plants like good drainage including the aloe vera. Once again, depending on the weather, water when necessary. If the earth is wet, don't water. My aloe vera is flowering at the moment.
