Back in the 50s and 60s, the US attained unprecedented affluence. They had a wealth like no other. This was why they had the "Swinging 60s" and the "Rock and Roll" era.

Yet, just 10 years earlier, the whole world was at war. In fact, the United Kingdom and Western Europe was on the verge of bankrupcy.

What caused the US to attained their wealth? Did the Americans attained their wealth when the Allies had to pay through their nose to buy weapons from them?

The economy attained amazing strength during ww2....liberty ships were ultimately turned out one per day. there was practically full employment. After the war, there was a demand for consumer goods (appliances, new cars- they hadn't been produced for civilian use since 1939-40)...and of course, the baby boom fueled a need for more and more goods. THE SWINGING 60's was actually a rebellion vs. the military industrial complex, among other things. And how do you know what the allies had to pay for U.S. weaponry?

And we squeezed the allies on war equip? Have you heard of the Marshall Plan? We realized that it made sense to rebuild Japan and Germany into democracies that became economic powerhouses. The Marshall Plan set the stage for modern day "nation-building," but was far more successful.

I'm the one
I found the birthday of the sun
But all things change
And I think it's the birthday of the rain

If I never said goodbye
To all that I've known
I would never be alone
But still I will not cry
I'm not finished yet, boy
So wipe the smile from your eyes
Because if I were to hang my head
I'd miss all the rainbows
And I'd drown in raindrops instead.

I'm the one
I found the birthday of the sun
And all things change
And I'm sure it's the birthday of the rain.

If I never said goodbye
To all that I've known
I would never be alone
But still I'm win
I'm not finished yet, world
So wipe the smirk from your chin
Because if I were to hang my head
I'd miss all the rainbows
And I'd drown in raindrops instead

But I'm the one
I found the birthday of the sun
And all things change
And now I'm sure it's the birthday of the rain
And all things change
And now I think it's the birthday of the rain
And all things change
And now I know it's the birthday of the rain
And all things change
And now I'm sure it's the birthday of the rain
And all things change
And now I'm sure it's the birthday of the rain
All things change
Happy Birthday to the rain

Alone in the clouds all blue
Lying on an eiderdown.
Yippee! You can't see me
But I can you.
Lazing in the foggy dew
Sitting on a unicorn.
No fair, you can't hear me
But I can you.
Watching buttercups cup the light
Sleeping on a dandelion.
Too much, I won't touch you
But then I might.
Screaming through the starlit sky
Travelling by telephone.
Hey ho, here we go
Ever so high.
Alone in the clouds all blue
Lying on an eiderdown.
Yippee! You can't see me
But I can you.

Two instead of one breadwinner per family. Our men came home and women were also wage earners. There were many households with two wageearners. We have suffered from it since in the 70's when women demanded respect and in the 80's and 90's and today as we continue to demand it, but one thing guys noted is that we can make it without them if we really need to and before in the 40's through 60's, alot of women just put up with men's @#%! because we didn't think we had a choice. Unfortunately, that is not a complete attitude change and there are still women who are ignorant enough to believe a man can have his way and she has to put up with it. But, it's getting better and many women teach their sons how to be considerate human beings and so younger men (30's and below) are usually more respectful toward women than the men 40+. Guys don't be offended. I said usually. There are of course exceptions to all rules

Wealth, particularly for countries, isn't like coins in a sack, that can be handed back and forth. The wealth of a country comes from industry, and it was the phenomenal growth of heavy industry in the U.S., compelled by the War, that fueled the boom of the 60s.

Incidentally, the U.S. subsidized the French and the Germans when the War was over, so as to allow them to rebuild their economies. Some was paid back, but much was forgiven (i.e., converted to grants).

Back then we had politicians that were actually FOR/OF/BY the people and not the greedy self centered pandering mongrels we have now. It USED to be that people were interested in "Creating a good life for all" now all the politicos want is to create a good life for themselves and a few chosen friends at the expense of everyone else. The whiners and complainers rule the country, you can't listen to the music you like because someone objects to it, you can't read the books you like or watch the movies you like because someone objects to it, you can't hang out with your friends like people used to because someone thinks you shouldn't do that, you can't wear certain clothes because someone might not like the slogan on your t-shirt. Having no freedoms people have "given up" and everyone is miserable and has no ambition anymore, they have killed the spirit of the people and we all say "WTF" and watch the place fall apart around us. Throw the Bums out, start over and no more "special interest groups" with an agenda to push, maybe then we can get this country back where it was. Nye

Continental U.S. escaped the war compared to Europe and the Far East, We've been on a crusade to bring our way of llife to the rest of the world ever since. Is it any wonder that Brits and our other allies of WWII are less eager to confront the possibility of another war and consequent devastation it might bring - hundreds of thousands of CIVILIANS being killed? Those allies would be s.o.l. except for the U.S. bail-out in WWII.

In my opinion it had to do with building factories to put to work the returning soldiers. The huge workforce had to have jobs and things like factories, and highways put a lot of people to work. When people are working and feel that they will be for a long time, they will spend money on the good life. These days with so many corporate takeovers and overseas goods, no one's job is a sure thing so people hang on to every dime and if they do spend it, it is on cheap crap made in China because they are afraid to over extend themselves in case their job ends.

Apart fro Pearl harbour, the US was not directly attacked during the war. This meant unlike the UK all their industry was intact. The Germans bombed the UK factiories which weakened our ecomnomy. Because the US were not attacked their economy was fine and they could easily recover.
