I am sick of people answering questions without really having an answer for you. I saw some of these answers before I write to make sure I don't duplicate information. But hit him? Make him feel guilty?
You need to find your local chapter of Big Brothers so he will get a male role model to talk to about these things. How old is your son? Where is dad? Oh, ok! ...Boys do it because it feels so good. It'd be like us older women doing...well...in public like. NO WAY! But they can become addicted to it, start doing it without knowing it in public, and will move on to stimulation rather than just his own hand. (ie, magazines, movie/video porn, computer porn, and can develop into an obsession that can become harmful to others if you know what I mean. Like getting a release from raping etc. Or even a sexual predator may see a sign that is saying to the world...I like this it feels good..and the predator will pay for him to do it in front of him. Or worse, child boy videos with the offer of friendship/understanding, and money. All kids want money. I'd say have a visit to the doctors, and tell him it is a "routine health examine for school next year" or something along that line. Before you go-when you make the appointment, inform the doctor of your concern that it might be getting ...a..um...out of hand! I'm a 50 year old woman and good humored so bare with me here ok? Its not serious yet, you didn't say how old he was, but if he isn't embarrassed that you saw him its time he talk to an adult male to clear boundary issues. But it's normal..and unsettling to us isn't it? I had a friend that had a four year old that, wow he discovered it felt good and walked around her house playing with himself. One day he came running out when I was there and came to mom and states "look mommy its all hard!", let me tell you I about died there in the chair! But I never saw her tell him to stop it, it wasn't nice. Or ANYTHING at all! I can just see him in school in kindergarden, .whats a teacher to do or say? She'd be in the same postion as you, helpless but wanting to do something huh? It is kinda rude.

I had an "abusive" father who did not understand and embarassed me in front of company when I was caught masturbating in the bathroom. He did a lot of damage that took years to heal and recover from. Your son is perfectly normal. I do wonder about you though if you are so rapt up in "catching him". Lighten up! Give the boy some privacy. Better yet, find him something that will increase his sex drive (not necessarily pornograply) but something such as a cute chick in a bikini. Put it up in his room, leave him a bottle of hand lotion and a note stating that you understand. Leave him a note explaining about why he should make sure his door is fully shut. Be sure to tell him you are proud he is becoming a young man. Then give him the privacy and respect he deserves. In this way you will not alienate him from you but you will have won his confidence and trust. Take it from someone who has been there.

Here is some advice from a father and grandfather on fathers day. Do not try to stop your son from masturbating. There is nothing wrong with this and it is an important stage in male sexuality. Masturbation is healthy for the male reproductive system, it release sexual tension in young males and thus enables them to control their sexual urges, it relaxes them, it feels really good, and it is the safest sex out there. What you need to do is to respect the privacy of your son. Indicate that you did not purposely interrupt this private moment. and that he needs to take a little responsibility for his sex. He needs to be sure he is modest, and makes adjustments for his privacy such as closing doors, etc. You need to allow him the privacy to develop sexually. Also, mention to him that he needs to clean up after himself and he can use kleenex tissues, a small towel, underwear that he changes out of, etc. You will find that young teen boys may masturbate 3 to 4 times a day. Within a year that will lessen, and as they become older masturbation will be less often. Also, masturbation is not a sin and for that matter is not specifically mentioned in the old or new testament. So mom allow your boy soon to be a man space and privacy to grow up. Do not try to catch him and keep him from it.

You can't stop a boy from jacking off. The only perfect way to prevent it would be 24/7 surveillance and that would just make him resent you. Tell him to shut his door. What he does for his own enjoyment that doesn't harm him is none of your business if he does it privately.

I hope your son is still a child, then I would hope he doesn't really understand why it's wrong.

If he's not a child, maybe he just enjoys masturbation in public places.

I suggest you ask an expert instead of taking any given advice and scarring your son for life : )

You are causing serious damage to your son. Why do you want him feeling bad for doing something so natural. It's when you suppress these natural tendencies(especially for hormonal teenagers) you are more likely to turn him into a sexual predator who feels guilty about sex and is unable to express his sexuality because he was told its a bad thing to do. This will cause him to release his sexuality in more anti-social ways. Perhaps you should explain that its ok and that he should do it in private. He's not hurting anyone.

leave him alone as long as he does it in private, its a natural part of developement, since the penis is a muscle it wont grow without stimuli which could cause him problems in later life not to mention giving some kind of hang up that isnt his but yours, its not dirty its natural, and good clean fun for him, dont be such a prude or make an issue of it,it really is normal and harmless.its his let him wash it as fast or as often as he likes.x

It's natural..u can't stop it...but if his room door is cracked..tell him that he needs to make sure he closes the door all the way. It's out of respect for u and privacy for him. And if it bothers u this much...I use to tell this to by brother when he didnt shut his door all the way...go into the bathroom and whack off in the shower..that way he never worries about messes nor interuptions. My parents didnt care if my brothers whacked off as long as they did their own laundry and towels..they even made them buy their own towels!!!! But u can't make him stop..
