A significant figure is the minimum number of digits in a decimal number in an equation. An example:

1.5 +1.43234

has only 2 significant digits. since the minimum number of digits occur in 1.5. Another example.

1.25000+1.752

has 3 significant digits since the 3 trailing zeros don't add any significance to the equation.

Significant digits denote the level of accuracy of a measurement. For example, I could get on a crude scale and determine that I weigh 185 lbs. This measurement would be significant to 3 digits. Alternatively, I could get on a very precise scale and determine that I weigh 185.743 lbs. This measurement would be significant to 6 digits.
