Shamu is a killer whale. They spend lots of time in the Arctic looking for seals to eat. The black and white coloring helps them blend into the environment of black water and white ice floes.

Orcas (killer whales) are black on the top so when they are viewed from above they blend in with the darker ocean bed. their bellies are white so that when viewed from below they blend in with the sun lighted waters above.

this allows them to sneak up on their prey easier than if they were brightly coloured
