Circumcision is a health issue for men/boys. Bacteria can grow so easily in the deep folds of their skin. Now girls circumcision is only practiced in third world countries where they agree that it is to keep a woman from having pleasure from sexual stimulation when they mature. I heard a story on Oprah that made me so mad, the men didn't want the women to enjoy sex because they were afraid it would lead to their not being able to control the women as much. The men wanted 150% control of everything and they could enjoy but not their women. I was appalled when I saw the program, it is the 20th century now, 2006! How can men do such atrocious things still? EVERYBODY should enjoy what God gave them.

Female circumcision is the equivalent to male circumcision. They cut off the clitoral hood, which is the exact same as cutting off the foreskin. Neither are necessary if you keep yourself clean. Female genital mutilation or FGM is where they cut off the entire clitoris and this is usually done on young girls for the same reason why circumcision is so popular in the US. If a child remembers the pain, they will not have sex for any other reason except reproduction. And yes, the original reason circumcision became so popular in the US was to stop boys from masturbating. These days its more so the son will look like the father or for convenience.
I think no one should have elective surgery until they are old enough to make the decision for themselves. I wouldn't put a tattoo on my child, I wouldn't have an infant get any piercings including ears because it is their body and it should be their decision.

Americans are the only country that routinely circumcises males for non-religious reasons. If you teach your child proper hygiene there is no reason for it if your religion doesn't dictate it. I worked in pediatric offices for years and I can tell you from personal experience that it is a painful, traumatic experience for babies. In addition there is also risks involved in the procedure (uncontrolled bleeding, too much foreskin removed, not enough, infection, and I've even heard of cases where the penis was almost completely removed by accident). Seems like a lot to put your child through just so "he'll look like Daddy". In fact, most insurance companies won't even pay for it because it's not considered medically necessary and is strictly a cosmetic procedure.
As for female circumcision that's a whole other story. It's abuse plain and simple. It's about control and ownership of women.

Male circumcision is ok because it helps keep the male organ cleaner. Cervical cancer rates drop to next to nothing in women when their husbands are circumcised. There is a Biblical mandate for male circumcision in the Old Testament but not required to have a relationship with God, according to the New Testament.
I don't know much about female circumcision. It seems unnecessarily cruel. Read the article below for more info.

female circumcision is child abuse, it butchers the girls body and is yet another way for men to control women. It's a horrible act. Most of the time it's performed in an unsterile environment using dull blades, or other objects found. No anesthecia is used. Girls are brought there to have their bodies abused for future males to own them. They have no enjoyment during sex, it's often painful and birth is even more excruciating and dangerous. there is no real reason for it,. and yet it still exists...
