another recent example of such a hate crime would be gwen araujo's case. she was a transgendered teen, when the people who killed her found out that she was a transgendered person, they killed her because having sex with her no longer qualifies them as heterosexuals.
3 men bashed her up so bad that it left indentations on a plaster wall where they kicked her head against it. its just so nasty. all they got was 15 years to life sentence for second degree murder!
the jury didnt even think it was a hate crime!
as for Matthew Sheppard, some bibble thumpers even planned to erect a memorial in casper sity park for him stating "mathew shepard - entered hell Oct 12th 1998, at the age of 21. in defiance of God's warning : thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; its an abomination"
this is just soo insensitive and typical of christian fundamentalists ! downright vindictive, and they have no rights to be so!

I'm from Denver, and a good friend of mine who is in the scene ( you know , the scene) said matthew was a full blown tweeker coke whore. I feel sorry for what happened to him, but I also think there is a missing part of the story that we will never know. I'm sure drugs was mentioned that night at the bar at some point, either to do, or get.

The Brandon Teena story really gets to me. It was the subject of the movie Boys Don't Cry with Hilary Swank. He was female-to-male transgender and was murdered and raped because of this....then the murder was largely dismissed by the small-town Nebraska police chief. Thankfully, his murderers were eventually brought to justice. It's sad that this kind of ignorance still exists. I have a very close friend who is in the exact same situation as Brandon, and I worry about him constantly.
If you wanna read more about this story, here is a great article:

Mathew was viciously murdered and I am so sorry that he has to suffer that way he did . It is cruel enough to decide to take someones life from them , but to kill in such an angry heinous way is intolerable . The boys that committed that crime should have gotten much worse for their cruelty .

I totally feel the same. those 2 boys deserved what they got. throughout numerous parts of the movie, i just broke out into tears because i hate what happened to him and i hate why it happened to him. The Laramie Project one of the best movies i have ever seen. i reccomend that EVERYONE go rent/buy it. it doesn't matter whether you're gay/straight, gay friendly/homophobic. just go see the godamn movie. it is soooooooooo worth it and it will change your views on homosexuality.

I agree with you! What a cowardice and cruel act by savages! Honestly, I had forgotten all about it, but when I read his name -- his story came flooding back to me.
Incidentally, I am hetero... but stories like these rip my heart out!
