HELP ME!

I have only had my NEW Dell Dimension 5100C for about a year or so and I love it. But today it went kah-put on me.

After getting my OLD dell computer up and running, disabling norton (per a tech support friend of mine's advice), and connecting both computers (old & new dells) to my super-old Microsoft router, I suddenly cannot power up my NEW dell!!! I press the power button and nothing happens at all.

And please don't be a wise guy/gal and ask if it is plugged in (DUH, it is)! I completely unhooked everything going into it except for the power cord & monitor cable.

How can I figure out why it won't power up? Will I lose my data? Did it get a virus from my old dell, which was acting strangely (explorer was crashing all of the time so I reinstalled my operating system, XP HOME).

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Make sure the computer is not trying to boot up when you do this. Remove all the sticks of RAM/ memory from the computer. Make sure you remember which way they go in or you can damage them when you try to put them in the wrong way...

Power on the computer. If it immediately starts to beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep..., your motherboard is okay, and it looks like your power supply is bad. If there is not one beep, your power supply, motherboard and processor (CPU) are all bad. You'll have to have them replaced... (or sadly, get a new computer if a new computer is cheaper than the parts...)

when u try and turn it on do the fans start at all? open the case and plug in the outlet. on the board in the lower left side of the mother is an LED light. If it is green then the boad has power and if the light on the power button is green then it isnt the power supply. if you have amber lights on the power button and on the board it sounds like you blew the fuse in the pwr supply. if u buy a new pwr supply make u tell the clerk you have a sell. the p2 connector is propritary to dell. It will take like 5 min to change out the power supply. 2 screws on the back of the case and there is a small green handle push bar that will let the pwr supply release. pull the p2 connection, the rectangle plug, pull the cd rom cable, HDD cable and floppy cable. and put in the new supply and hook things back up. another thing u may want to try is if u have pwer to the fans, and green lights on the front and on the main board, you may have a loose I/O cable. if you open the case look for a black cable that runs from the front of the compter to the board. it should be the only black cable in the case. The I/O board connects the power button and the spring in the button may be broke or the I/O board is shot. both are easy fixes.

Sorry if this went on too long, but i work on dell compters all day and see alot. If you have anymore questions plz feel free to send me a message.

Ok...there should be a switch on the upper back part of your computer, it will say O and I. Switch it to the O position and wait for 15-20 seconds. Switch it back to I and push the power button. If that doesnt work, then that probably means there is either something wrong with your power supply, or something wrong with your motherboard. It's going to require you to either A. Call Dell and figure out what is wrong with it, or B. Find an old computer that you dont use anymore (or a friend who is willing to do this), remove his power supply and attach it to the motherboard of your computer. Eh...this will take some time and some experience plus know how so I very much recommend you get someone who knows what they are doing to perform this step.
Otherwise deal with Dell support.

First thing to try is the fuse on the power supply cable. If replacing that doesn't help then it is highly likely the power supply unit in the computer. Not as drastic as it sounds, you'll just need to replace or have it replaced. They are not overly expensive, best buy will even fit it for about $30. Your data should be fine if it's the PSU that's the problem. IM me if you need more help.

Dell huh? If you have an Extra Power Supply, you can exchange them to see if it works. It could be the Power Outlet?? Also Sell the powerSupply does it smell like burnt?? Try Unpluggin Everything...or Swap between the POwer Cables of your Know working unit to this Dell.
