Well, you have different types of tillage systems now.
Conventional: Mostly using plows, chisels, disks, cultivators, etc
Reduced: also called vertical, it only includes vertical tillage with very low re motion of the soil.
Zero Till: only uses a zero till drill or planter and the rest of the controls are purely chemical.
A good project would be to investigate why is that the percentages of adoption of the different systems varies within the different areas in the US or the World.
This is mostly because of different needs, different costs of production, different types of soils, textures of the soils and soil deepness and different weathers.
Good luck!!!

Some new changes and developments that are more current( not sure how far back you have to go) would be ethanol production, GPS, bio security in agriculture, organic products, etc. Another interesting topic that would span many years and could be looked at in more detail would be transportation of agriculture products. You could research the effect transportation abilities have had on where agriculture goods are produced.

you could desire to look at this action picture (or e book) called weapons, Germs, and metallic. It talks approximately how some cultures thrived on an identical time as others floundered because of the variety of agriculture they stepped forward.
