Ladysmith .38 (Smith & Wesson)

Revolver, easy to load and operate. No exposed hammer to get caught on clothing or in purse.

Oh, not much of a recoil either.

The first thing I consider when buying a handgun is size of the round. I like .45 acp, and 9x19mm. The .45 has stopping power, no doubt there, but is a bit heavier, and generally less acurate due to the greater recoil when the weapon is fired. If you shoot a man within 25M with a .45 , you'll drop him.
9x19 has gained popularity due to its accuracy. The US army switched from .45 model 1911 handguns to the M9 beretta 9mm, because the army felt it was more accurate. I admit it is, and a 25M target is easy to hit even at a quick-draw, but it lacks stopping power. A 9mm clip is usually going to hold twice as many rounds in the same storage space. Also the weight is reduced. I personally would not recommend a handgun lower than a 9mm, simply because I feel the lower caliber weapons are too weak, and are better used to throw at an enemy than to shoot.
-Now what model of gun depends on what you use it for. The big distinction is revolvers and pistols. I tend to favor pistols, but I can respect the revolver as well. A revolver can vary in size and length. If you wee to say, keep a gun in a purse or handbag, a snub nose pistol might be the right gun for you. typically a bit more affordable, revolvers have far less moving parts, and therefore are less succeptible to jamming and breaking. I'm sure you have seen a western or two, and have seen that the hammer strikes the blasting cap on the back of the round, and the bullet fires. Then puling the trigger will move the cyllinder to place the next round in the chamber.
If you wonder why in old movies the cowboys and such are smacking the top of the gun at the hammer backwards, it is because those weapons are "single action" . This means that you must pull the hammer back manually before each round is fired. Don't buy those.
-Pistols, pistols are fun. They are magizine fed, typically slide action weapons. I like pistols. The types to look at here are ones with an external hammer, and composite handguns. External hammer would mean a pistol you can cock back the hammer manually, as you might a revolver. These weapons are good weapons, and a lot of fun.
The composite weapons are often refered to as "Glocks" for the gun manufacturer of the same name. These have a squared top rail made of metal, and the grip and trigger well is made of plastic or other composite materials. I personally recommend these. The downside is many of these do not have a thumb safety, but rather a trigger safety, which could lead to accidental discharge if not carried with care and respect. They vary in size, from 3in concealed versions, to 5in tactical, and beyond. They are reliable, lightweight, and very affordable.
If I was to recommend a handgun for you, I would get a springfield armory XD pistol, 3in concealable, 9X19mm; or a smith & wesson model 1911SD .45 with laser sights.
Good luck and happy hunting!!

Choosing a handgun should be based on the individual, not a gender. That said, hand size and grip strength are important considerations. You should also factor in such variables as your experience level, why you want a handgun, and where you live.

A good quality, light weight, compact, hammerless revolver might be an excellent choice (Smith and Wesson Model 340 Revolver, using .38 caliber rounds, for example).

Regardless of the handgun you choose, you should consider lessons and/or practice with it so that you can handle it safely and use it effectively. Remember to keep weapons locked safely out of the reach of children!

A lot of women buy those 2" barreled , 5 shot compact revolvers at the advise of some well meaning, but unintelligent person. These revolver are easy to put in your purse and conceal on your person, but to the untrained, your chances of hitting anything under stress is VERY LOW.I would recommend a 4" barrel, six shot, revolver in .38 special caliber. This gun can still be carried in most purses women carry, and your hit probabilities will be enhanced greatly. My other advise, don't just buy a gun to keep around until you need it. You must practice with it to become proficient, like anything else in life. A lot of women also buy a gun without the intention of ever using it in a self defense situation. Bad move. A weapon is NOT designed to scare , it is intended to defend your life, and the lives of your loved ones.If you don't have the "guts" to use a gun against another person, I would recommend you use a baseball bat, or something similar.

Depends on what you can handle. I once had a little 25 automatic, easy to carry, easy to shoot, not heavy, but would likely just p*ss someone off if you actually shot them unless you are good at aiming and shooting where it counts.
Need to probably go to a handgun store and get a gun that 'fits' your hand. Good luck.

Nothing under .38 or 9mm. The best thing is to try and find a range where you can rent pistols and just try everything. I've read about enough women using .45s so I wouldn't be afraid of them either.

I have a little .25 pistol. It's tiny and easy to use. I, of course, also have a .22 rifle and a .410 so I'm fairly well set for a home invasion, coyote raiding the hen house, and squirrel hunting.....
