Bees are constructing a honeycomb above my garage door behind a basketball backboard. It's only about 2 square inches right now. It was amusing to watch over the weekend, but it's time for it to go before it gets dangerous. What's the safest way to get rid of this honeycomb?

If they are honey bees then look in your phone book for a bee keeper. Honey bees are vital to agriculture and you do not want to kill their nest. But they build their nests inside hollow spaces usually and never out in the open. It sounds like you have a small wasps nest and if it is not a covered nest it's probably a solitary wasp that will do you no harm. I had 3 of these exposed honey comb nests in my greenhouse last year all active with 2 to 4 wasps and they never bothered anyone. If you do want to kill them go to a hydroponic store in your area and pick up some pyrethin spray, it's made from crushed chrysanthemums and will do the least harm to the environment.

Well, first you need to know if they are active nests or not. What you're describing sounds more like wasps. If you can see honeycomb like structures, it's not hornets. And wasps make new nest every year, so they are probably old. Or at least most of them are old. Since it is still early in the year, any active nests will still be small. Get a good wasp spray and blast them at nightfall or first light, all of them will be on the nest then. Just make sure you have a good solid footing working in an attic, you don't want to fall through the ceiling. Come back a couple hours later and pull the nests down and bag them up.

take some hay and wrap it tightly around an old broom handle.light the end with the hay and stomp out the fire so that it smokes alot, hold the handle with the smoke at the honeycomb. The bees will leave due to the smoke then you can safely knock down the honeycomb and discard of it.Just make sure in the process that you do not stomp on or mash any of the bees and you will be okay.if you do crush or stomp on any,get back cause a whole swarm of them are headed your way with the intention of stinging.Bees only sting if they sense that you will hurt them and they since this by you killing another one.

Good luck and be careful

I use a bug spray by Raid that shoots out a foam to kill flying insects. I wait until the evening when the bees settle down or early in the am before they get started. Then, knock down the nest and destroy it. These things can get huge.

Get professional help. You do not want to be stung by the bees. They will be very protective of their space.

If you can't afford a professional, you can use smoke to quiet them down, or you can buy a spray from a nursery and kill that way. Make sure you are well covered up if you plan to do it yourself.

Wait till early morning when they are cooler and not moving fast and knock/scrape it off with either a stick or the garden hose. No big deal. Does not sound like honeybees. probably some type of wasp.

I assume these are honeybees you're talking about?
If so, contact ag extension, and a beekeeper will be more than glad to take the swarm off of your hands, especially given the price of bees these days.

First spray it with the bee & wasp spray ( you can buy it almost anywhere), and then knock it off somehow throw it away. The bees will leave too.
