absolutely.
They are essentially the same instrument. It's just that the electric guitar doesn't require a big hollow body, and it's strings are typically thinner. I actually learned guitar using my electric guitar first, but it really doesn't make a difference.

I've been playing for over thirty five years and I've told a lot of students the same thing, some listen, some don't, but most that get an electric guitar are sorry, there's nothing worst then hearing an electric guitar played by someone who doesn't know how to play, it's not a pretty sound, and most students don't like it either, get and acoustic, even an electric acoustic if you like, that way when you do learn to play you can plug it in ! Yamaha has a great sounding one for about $250.00, and on sale even less, if not on sale ask the clerk for a deal, they sometimes take off as much as thirty dollars, good luck !!!

yes definetly....
everything is the same....
BUT, playing the electric guitar is somewhat tricky and different in certain aspects... like if you strum hard on the E.Guitar, it will sound odd.... and even if you bend the strings slightly in the E.Guitar while playing chords, it can sound really odd....
I find the normal guitar, good for playing just for the fun of it... and electric guitar for performance...... however, if you do get a top notch normal guitar with a good pickup device, then you can use it for both performance and fun

Actually it is easier to play electric guitar if you learn on acoustic guitar. Unless you have a crappy electric guitar. This is because it is usually easier to press the strings on electric.

yes you can.the fretboards are the same.as a matter of fact,I think playing an electric is easier because the neck is usually smaller(thinner) and it is easier to reach the notes above the 12th fret. good luck and lots of studying!!!!!

it should be the same, but you can get more "twang" out of an electric guitar.
