Ophidiophobia/Ophiophobia is the fear of snakes, colloquially termed Snakephobia.

Snakes are found in almost every habitat and therefore interaction with humans is common. This can be part of the reason for fear of snakes, but there is also learned fear from parents or other people which contributes to it.

Most people who live in, or go to areas where snakes inhabit hear stories of dangerous encounters with the reptile. If you grow up in the rural areas, generally you are taught from an early age to avoid them and told of the dangers.

The root cause of most phobias is what is referred to as instinctive behavior. Going back hundreds of millions of years, pre-humans and even our pre mammal ancestors randomly acquired the genetic predisposition to either fear or not fear snakes. Those that had no instinctive fear of snakes would satisfy their curiosity by getting too close and were bitten. Thus over time, nature favored the cautious ones for survival, thus the gene for being afraid became the dominant characteristic. The same could be said for fear of heights or any other instinctive fear. Those without it were weeded out of the gene pool long ago.

Ophidiaphobia is a fear of snakes.
I have no idea what Freud's explanation is, but what I believe is that it is a fear that is programed into our genetics. Snakes can kill a human with one little bite and humans as a species has been dealing with snakes and spiders since the day we evolved. It is the same principal that causes birds to migrate.
