I tavel the world and I have settled in Hong Kong which I beleive is a safe place to live., it has a large multicultral socierty and they seem to get on with one another quite well, better than most countries I have visited.BUT there are one or two things that puzzle me. Very few people smile and no one eyeballs you.I always say a smile and a hello costs you nothing, I treat my fellow being as equile. I am no better than him or her and he or she is no better than me nomatter what there status. I respect each and everyone as long I am given the same respect. When I do meet others, after awhile they say < you are a nice person you are happy all the time ) I reply by saying, I am just an ordinary person and like to meet others., because that is the only way to make friends.
So when was the last time you smiled at someone you did not know and when was the last time you walk down the street and looked at other people and how many have done the same to you.

I'm just like you, I'm in the business of dealing with people on a daily basis and I love it. It's sad but true, courtesy and respect for your neighbor has seemed to have disappeared. People tend to not say anything or do all they can to avoid eye contact anymore for fear of getting involved or the fear of the other person thinking your are trying to challenge them. That's sad. I'm like you, I have no problem looking a person in the eye and ask them How they are doing and I will keep on doing it, not because I have to, but because that is what makes me feel good. So maybe some day we will run into each other and never know it, who knows, I may have been the guy that held the door open for you. :)

You know, I've dealt with this very phenomenon here recently in answers and I'm happy to repeat myself with your question. Many children are taught that "it is impolite to stare." I say, this is the worst possible advice. The first line of defense and the sense that will give you the best chance of understanding and surviving your world, is YOUR EYES! You are allowed and SHOULD USE YOUR EYES at all times, except when someone notices that you are looking at them, then look away, and come back when they lose interest. Everyone is so inattentive to what your eyes are doing, you can use them without regard to others' feelings. See the world for what it is, not for what you want it to be.
Become one who HAS THE EYES TO SEE! Best advice I can give on any subject. Thanks for your question.. --->UCSteve.

The world is over populated. We have become dulled to each others presence. I love my small community in which this major issue isn't a problem.

If we all smiled and said hello to the world around us all the time, would it be a better place, or just noisier?

I smile at everybody- and mostsmile back. (World Travel-havent dont it yet, but I'm on my way!) The other ones who don't smile back kind of irritate me, and make me sad at the same time. Don't know why- they just do. And from what I've seen while traveling (mind you i havent been out of my own country yet- perhaps once i'm a foregner it will be different.) People glance at one another but don't eyeball because its considered impolite to stare.

That is the way I have been throughout my life, but many cultures teach that it is rude to do so. I can see especially how an oriental culture would be so and America close, but to a different degree in the spectrum.
