He was totally inconsistent and ruined what was shaping up to be a great game. I agree with the red card dismissal of De Rossi, but he was out to assert his authority and importance from the word go. 4 minutes in he yellow cards Totti and it was all down hill from that point on. He appeared very self involved. His decision to disallow the Italian goal, cost them the game, irrespective of how well or poorly they played. he changed the direction of the game and probably had the players so fearful to play their natural game for fear of the dreaded red and yellow cards. Players should be pulled up and penalized for rule breaches, however he went ballistic with it for most of the game then appeared not to bother in the closing stages. Inconsistency in the manner he showed will cause players to play beneath their best levels. They will be afraid to seriously challenge for and attack the ball.He was simply unbelievable and I pray he is demoted and dealt with by FIFA.

It all started with the yellow card the ref gave Totti of Italy. It just kind of went downhill from there. It is really sickening knowing the US was beating the Italians the first 20+ minutes when it was 11 v. 11. I wish FIFA would call for a rematch of this game so that both teams had a fair shot because the ref screwed both teams. As a true American fan, I would have much rather seen us lose by a goal in a fair, hard fought match than to pull out a tie under these circumstances. To show you how very proud I am of our boys, I cried at the end of the game...that sort of cry that parents do when their son/daughter graduates from school. I am praying that they can pull off a 2-0 win agaisnt Ghana, and Italy spanks the Czechs so we can face Brasil in the next round and show the world how much we have improved. I am still sick over that handball by Germany last world cup that kept the US from advancing farther in the tournament!

I found this in a news archive online...from 2002...
"REFEREE BANNED
MONTEVIDEO: An Uruguayan referee designated to officiate at this year’s World Cup finals has been ruled out of the competition after being found guilty of corruption by his national federation. Jorge Larrionda and four other referees — Gustavo Mendez, Oliver Viera, Carlos Lopez and Fenando Cresci — were stripped of their status as international referees for six months after a three-month investigation into the allegations of corruption."
Ok so why was this man trusted to referee a 2006 World Cup match? He may not have been guilty of corruption this time but perhaps he just doesn't know how to officiate at a match unless he is told how to...I hope he isn't going to work any other matches because he certainly cost both the US and Italian teams on Saturday.

I have no clue but I don't think two highly of him right now. The only calls that I really agreed with was the elbowing one against Italy and the offside one against the USA (After seeing the replay)
I think he is a little too card happy.
All FIFA World Cup referees are evaluated supposedly after each game...I have a feeling FIFA is going to be looking deeply into him...

It was a tough match to call...very physical all over the field. The first 2 red cards were good calls....the 3rd was in his dreams only.
The biggest problem was that, like they usually do, the Italians took dives in order to draw calls....and the ref fell for them over and over again! The Italian players have perfected the dive and the ref was not close enough to the play to catch it!
