A phrase is part of a sentence that cannot stand alone.
Examples:
The girl
A lot of purple bugs
Ran through the park
Helped the lady
On the front of the dress
Before the movie
A sentence is a complete thought with a noun phrase and a verb phrase.
Examples:
The girl danced all night.
A lot of purple bugs are on my bed.
Martha and I ran through the park
Javier helped the lady.
There are pink flowers on the front of the dress.
My date bought popcorn before the movie.
If that's not what you meant, then maybe you meant phrase as in "idiom" or "saying." In that case, a phrase is something commonly said - and it often involves figurative language.
Examples:
It's raining cats and dogs.
She looks like a million bucks.
You woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

A general characteristic of language is that words are not directly combined into sentences, but rather into intermediate units, called phrases, which then are combined into sentences. The sentence “The shepherd found the lost sheep” contains at least three phrases: “the shepherd,” “found,” and “the lost sheep.” This hierarchical structure that groups words into phrases, and phrases into sentences, serves an important role in establishing relations within sentences. For instance, the phrases “the shepherd” and “the lost sheep” behave as units, so that when the sentence is rearranged to be in the passive voice, these units stay intact: “The lost sheep was found by the shepherd.”
