If you look to the animal kingdom, it is the one who stands out from the herd that gets nailed by the preditor. if you look at it that way it is better to fit in.
when getting recognition for your work or something that you need it is better to stand out.
so in a way depending on what you want and whether or not you're a gazzele, neither one is better than the other at all time.
both are equally valuble in it's own right.

Stand out. Because by standing out, you enhance development, since fitting in implies accepting the current situation. Also, by standing out you will open a new chance for those who cannot stand out, to fit in, in the newly developed situation, thus developing them as well. Of course, I assume you are standing out because you are a genius or a leader or a scientist or a reformer whose goals and interests are for the well fare of humanity as well, and not a corrupt politician or a gangster whose intentions by standing out are selfish and may be evil.

It's a personal choice. I think we all stand out in at least one area of our lives. One is not better than the other. To fit in prevents chaos and to stand out creates chaos. Both are necessary.

Probably to fit in. When you stand out, people think you are wierd. It's ok in you 20's and 30's, but doesn't work so well after that.

It is best to stand out and fit in. It's a tough thing to balance, but is very rewarding.
