If you get a HP Compaq get one of the business lines, do not get a Presario or Pavillion, I have had way to many of this come in that are only a couple months old with bad motherboards. There business lines seem to be great, I have handled more of them and am yet to have any major hardware issues. The Presario and Pavillion notebooks are made by a different company, then there business lines.
As far as the Toshiba goes, if possiable order one of the Tecra's. The Satellites are really hit or miss, a few of them are great laptops but most of the newer ones are crap. The Satellites are made by the same company that makes the Presarios. Toshiba actually makes the Tecra's and they are one of my personal favorates on the market.
For the most part, business class laptops are much better machines, for many reasons. They are made of higher quality parts then the consumer lines, part of this is they really want you to buy the replacements from them when it comes time to upgrade, because some of the larger companies will order over 1000 laptops at a time and that is a customer you do not want to lose. Another big factor is a home user is usually much easier on there system, taking it to and from work, school, home etc and they usually will baby it because that was alot of money to spend on a system. Business users on the other hand usually are much rougher on them and have to take them everywhere. The employies also do not treat them as good as if it was there own because, they dont have all that money into it.

Ouch...the Compaq laptop has much better specs...the Semperon 3000+ will run circles around the 1.4 Celeron. The extra RAM is much better is well. I do officially hate Compaq laptops, however, as they are low-quality and have bad service records.
I'm going to agree with the first guy and recommend a Dell laptop. You can buy them at the lowest prices online direct from Dell's website. Even your school's "discount price" will be - at best - the same price as Dell's site.

Out of the selection you provided, I'd go for Toshiba. HPs are cheaply built and produce nothing but problems. I know this from personal experience and the experience of others.
Mind you that Toshiba has gone down in quality over the years. They're not bad to own, but they're not as great as they use to be.
If you're willing to kick in more money for quality, I highly recommend IBM. They're the best business-class laptops out there although they're not much for appearance.

Go with HP on this one. Forget the processor and just think that you're getting twice the ram and much better sound.
If you really want to know the amd is faster but I don't know exactly how much (about 10-20% in most tests)

Depend upon what kind of applications you will be running. If it is means for watching movies, running MS Office or any other application suite, light weight Celeron model (Toshiba) is recommended. Else go for AMD.

Well, with my previous experiences, HP computers don't do too well. I've had one before and my father has owned several before. We concluded it was a not-so-good brand.
