the temerature gage on our 1995 mercury mystique is not working. i have checked the wires and replaced the thermostat and it still does not work. what could it be?

i also had the coolant sensor rewired.

If the car has overheated, you may have pegged the gage. Check the temperature sensor and make sure the electrical connections are clean.

Well you said you changed the wires, but not the temp sensor. This sensor is located most of the time in the thermostat housing.
Over time it gets corroded with minerals from the water in the rad.If this buildup gets to much it will insulate the sensor from the water and it will not read the heat on the gage.
Replace the sensor.

The most likely culprits are the sensor in the thermostat housing or the gage itself.

Find the wire to the guage and turn ignition key on and ground the wire, if it pegs the guage remove wire from the ground source, if this brings guage back to 0 your wire, and guage are ok and you need to check the sensor.
This vehicle has a seperate sensor for the guage and a seperate sensor for the cooling fans.
