Unfortunately, the people that will answer 'yes' to this with little true thought will always quote the bible. We are the only animal on this planet that mates for life (or at least attempts it). As a side note we are also the only mammal that continues to drink milk after being weaned, but I digress. It is totally against nature to mate for life, and I feel the reason that the divorce rates are going up is because of this return to the norm. Any statistician will tell you that eventually everything regresses to the average, or the normal curve, given time.

No respectable sociologist, anthropologist, philosopher, or sex therapist would say that humans are naturally monogamous. There is simply no credible evidence to support the notion that life-long monogamy is natural, but there is overwhelming good evidence against it. It is true that humans tend toward pair-bonding, but this does not necessarily mean that life-long sexual monogamy is optimal for most humans. Bottom line: Humans are not “naturally monogamous” but even if a majority of humans were naturally monogamous, it would NOT mean that ALL humans are “naturally monogamous.”

No, human monogamy is cultural and religious. Mankind is about as monogamous as most monkeys. There are other species that mate for life, but had not society set and ingrained the 'rules' regarding monogamy, it wouldn't exist as we know it.

Man made the rules and the natural instinct to be sexually attracted to other members of our species has always been stiffled to protect and nurture an orderly society. If we were naturally monogamous, society wouldn't have to make rules to enforce it

The urge to have sex with someone other than your spouse or with several people is not cheating. it's natural. Actually having sex with another is physical infidelity, wanting to do it is as natural as breathing.

I think it really depends on the person. I know a lot of religious people will bash on me for saying that though. I have good friends in a polyamourous relationship, and it's worked out very well. However, flat-out cheating can be very hurtful (well, that's an understatement), and polyamourous relationships only work out because the three (or more) stand on equal ground, rather than sneaking around to be with each other. If this makes sense, that's awesome, because its late and I probably should be in bed.

Humans are absolutely NOT mannogomous, by nature.

I am married and both my husband and I are monogomous and share the same opinion that we CHOOSE manogomany.

But why choose?

First, our children benefit from a consistent set of male and female role models. We are Mom and Dad and intend to stay so.
Second, there is a spiritual experience that happens when one grows beyond the urge to mate with anyone who is appealing to you. The depth of your relationship deepens greatly everytime you survive one of those times when it would be easier to leave or be unfaithful.

Understanding our nature as non-manogamous beings is extremely important because it helps us prevent situations which may be tempting to our non-manogamous nature. For example, we don't form close cross-sex relationships. The temptation for anyone would be too great. If one denies one's nature, it only makes it easier to follow it.

We are not birds; we are humans.
Humans are not monogamous by nature but only by choice. And the choice is for very good reasons.

You are right on!

Back in the old days when the bible was written, humans lived to age 25 or 30, had kids at 11 12 and 13. It wasn't that hard to be in love with no other interests than your first love. Now it is a rare thing to find folks in their 50's or higher to still have their first love with them. I'm of course not counting accidents, where tragically one looses a spouse.

Monogamy is not just for animals. Humans are taught to be monogamous through the examples of parents and friends and their believe in their particular religion. Although it is not instinctive, it is natural.

There is only one species (I forgot which one) on the planet that is naturally monogamous and it's physically attached to its mate. Biologically, humans are not meant to be monogamous. But having the ability to think means that we should be able to overcome our biology and act above our instincts.

I think the real issue here is how can a human being obtain happiness. The human sexual appetite is a hunger that can never be satisfied. No matter how many partners one has, they will always want another, which basically means they are no closer to happiness after the 100th partner, as they would be after the first.

We need to bond to gain support from someone we know we can trust, confide in, support in times of need and share our problems with. There are so many things we get from monogamous relationships that are impossible without it. It is proven that children need a father and mother present and the security of a good married foundation to grow up healthy minded. Single parent children or children with a parent frequently absent, such as working constantly are those most likely to shoot up a school or get involved in crime and drugs. The cycle is continuous since these same children when they marry will leave their families.

Will a one night stand be there for you when you need him. Will you have anyone to share memories with as you get older. Will anyone be there when your older and not as attractive. Or would you rather have that someone that thinks your more beautiful with age because of the love you have shared. It is selfish and reckless to want to wonder from partner to partner with no responsibility to yourself, your partner or others. Sex is nothing more then a selfish act without love in it.
