A nonprofit is a corporation that has been filed under the nonprofit provisions of its state's incorporation laws. If a nonprofit has a qualifying charitable purpose under section 501(c)(3) of the Federal tax law, then it is a nonprofit charity and has tax exempt status.
In order to get 501(c)(3) status an organization first needs to file as a nonprofit within its state and then file federal tax form 1023, and the IRS decides whether it qualifies or not.
So, not all nonprofits are tax exempt. If an organization is not only a nonprofit, but an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, then it is tax exempt. To put it simply, the difference is whether the organization has to pay taxes.
Whether an organization conducts business or just accepts donations has absolutely nothing to do with it.

A non-profit organisation basically puts any funds received back into the business (for example the Red Cross). A charity is usually something that doesn't do any thing that receives money other than donations and money from selling of donated things and events, in order to benefit someone or something. For instance, Candlelighters.

non profit - is when an organization does not make a profit - they take donations and have fund raisers - they pay for supplies and pay employee wages - but the proceeds all get turned back into the community - a volunteer does not get paid - they sometimes work for non profit organizations - for free - or just volunteer to help any person out at no charge - its usually physicall - building or handing out plates for homeless and elderly - if you did not get paid it was volunteer work - if you got paid anything other than room and board - it isnt non profit for you but the orginization you worked for was most likely non profit - if not then they should have paid you -
