Ok...when you make a pc here are the things that you will need...I included products with prices for your convienience, when you shop around you certainly can go for other options as there are literally hundreds:
Motherboard.......Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail---$99

Processor......AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor - Retail---$206

RAM.........Kingston HyperX 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System ... - Retail----$93

Video Card........eVGA Geforce 7600GT 256-P2-N554-AX Video Card - Retail----$175

Case...........COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Computer Case - Retail----$50

Power Supply...........ASPIRE ATX-CW500WP4 500W Power Supply - Retail----$40

Hard Drive......Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM---$59

Optical Drive.......BenQ 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With LightScribe Black ATA/ATAPI Model DW1655 - OEM---$39

Monitor.....ViewSonic Q9b-2 Black 19" 8ms LCD Monitor Built in Speakers - Retail---$210

Total Cost: $971
Prices/products from NewEgg.com

I would suggest getting to know how to put these things together otherwise you could totally turn this thing into a paperweight...you should get a friend of yours who does this as a hobby or a professional to put it together.
This computer is a good midrange computer, easily capable of handling anything you would need it to do, including modern pc games like Quake 4 and FEAR...and the Sims if your not into that shooter stuff ;).
This does not include Windows XP...that will add another $80 but I dont include it in this one because you may be able, like I have, to find a nice corperate copy and get it free ^^;. Otherwise, I suggest downgrading the processor to an AMD Athlon 64 3500 (make sure it is 939 and not AM2 version).

To have an operating PC, here's the minimal of what you'll need...

- Monitor
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Computer case
- Motherboard
- Processor
- Fans for Case and Processor
- Cables
- Power Supply
- Harddrive
- RAM
- Video Card (if one is not built into the motherboard)
- Operating System Software

The rest is optional. Now if you're willing to spend $1,000, I recommend purchasing all your parts on www.newegg.com

You can build a basic PC for under $500. But $1,000 should get you a lot of nice stuff.

1. The local computer store has books on building the computer.
2. The local book store also has books and magazines on building computers.
3. The reading level for these 100-1500 page books? About Grade 12. Will it be lowered I say 'NO, Never' there are pictures included already.

Uhmmm for $1000 you can buy a pretty decent computer, especially from a good mom & pops computer parts shop. The link below is where I get most of my parts when I build.

if you really wanna know, my suggestion would be to go to a computer parts store and ask them. Or find someone who knows what they're doing. Kthx.
