Statistically, Ray Lewis has higher numbers than Brian Urlacher regarding combined tackles and interceptions (1286 vs 698; 21 vs. 7). Urlacher has more QB sacks than Lewis (32.5 vs. 23)and both are tied for forced fumbled (7 each). The only major difference is that Ray Lewis has played for 4 MORE SEASONS than Urlacher. If both players had played an exact number of games, then a more fair comparison can be made. Ray Lewis is an excellent middle linebacker, but Urlacher will exceed Lewis's totals in almost every area defensively. Urlacher has also had a more immediate impact on his team's defensive scheme than Lewis (just look at how fast each team's defenses climbed up the league's ranks generally and how long they maintained their position).
Between these two, Urlacher is the better. Amongst the rest of the league's middle linebackers, Urlacher leads the way.

In response to the first answer, that is Lewis's total for 10 years, not for 3. Those are his career numbers, which means if you do the math, their tackle totals are all fairly close (based on Lewis's numbers at 6 years). Chicago has a great aggressive defense now, but until a couple years ago, Urlacher didn't have much around him, and they played really conservative. Lewis has had a good defense around him for most of his career. Lewis shows off a whole lot more than Urlacher does, but I'd take Urlacher over Lewis any day of the week. It drives me nuts when I hear people talk about how Ray Lewis is one of the top LBs ever. He's one of the best in this era, but there's no need to go trying to put him on all-time lists. To be fair, I don't think Urlacher deserves it either, at least not at this point in his career.

Lewis' numbers lie...this is football not baseball stats are skewed because it is the ultimate team game. Lewis' numbers are so good because he has had better down lineman than Urlacher. Now that the gap is closing Urlacher is comparing more favorably. Lewis is more of a big hitter, Urlacher covers from sideline to side line better. I think in 2006 as in 2005 you will Urlacher will outperform the older Ray Lewis, securing his spot at the best in the game right now.

Brian Urlacher best ILB in NFL period!! Ray Lewis has alot of mileage and is past his prime. Urlacher is clearly the better of the two at this point in their careers.

There is absolutely no question. It's Brian Urlacher. Ray Lewis is done. He's on the downside of his career.

Ray Lewis is th best linebacker in the NFL right now, he is in the prime of his carreer. He plays with all his heart, that also makes him the best lineback. He accells at the Q.B the takes him down for a sack, and if it isn't a sack, it is a forced fumble.
