Ruby is the mineral Corundum ( Aluminum oxide)
Garnet is a Silicate ( Silicon oxide) SiO4
Sapphires are all colors but RED. Red Corundum is called Ruby.
Pink is sometimes called pink sapphire or pink ruby.
Garnets come in all color but blue. But blue can be made.
To me the Garnet is a brighter red and more crystalline; but there are many beautiful orange and green garnets.

Garnet is a deep dark red where Rubys are a pinky color. I know doesnt make sense since we affiliate Rubys with red but if you actually look at it a ruby has a pink color in the center and as it goes out it turns red. Both are beautiful though.

Ruby is a red gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide) in which the color is caused mainly by chromium
The garnet group of minerals show crystals with a habit of rhombic dodecahedrons and trapezohedrons. Garnets are most commonly red in color but can be found in a variety of colors, including purple, red, orange, yellow, green, brown, black, or colorless

I'm sure that someone else can tell you the crystal and chemical stuff, but from my POV, the ruby is incredibly more beautiful. (And expensive!)
Garnets are more of a brown red, and not as transparent.
Rubies have a pinker color, and a great deal more fire.
~sigh~ I own niether.
