the why is because being smart doesn't mean you cannot be brain washed so all i can say is that all of the ones who had fallen into killing and murdering others based in religious teachings may not had known that what they were doing was wrong which by the way still doesn't justify them .
an example of this could be a man called Hernan Cortez who dare killing 8 million Mexicans just because they did not believe the same which he did and still was made a hero not only by his religion but also by all of his country i must add that Hernan was a very smart person .

Religion is one of the most powerful paradigms and archetypes of history. By nature, the human being follows its instincs before thinking critically, with time and education we have learned to use our brain instead of letting the instincs go by. But, actually, the most innate and powerful instincs, like those of survival and pleasure, never die, and these are the ones manipulated by extremist religions to make smart people do what they want.

Maybe because they are not that intelligent and smart in the first place, intelligent and smart people tend to think very highly of themselves, they like to change things according to their taste, religion, on the other hand, is basically one giant convenient tool for for people who want to impose their opinion on others, before, if you were against him, you are just against on human being, however smart and intelligent he is, now if you were against him, you are against the will of god. People who have tendency to impose their will, mostly intelligent people, like that.
