I have a Dell 5100 Inspiron which I recently purchsed it on Ebay. I left a DVD movie playing for my little brother while a went quickly to the store. When I got back he had the AC/charger on the carpet. Sooner or later the laptop gave out. The adaptor was overheated and I thought that the ac/adaptor have gaven out. So I bought a new one through Ebay and when I received it would turn on for a second and shut off. Tried it without the battery and nothing. So I don't know what it could be. Please help thanks.

Hey, Broseph. I think you'll be ok. My guess would be that it's the batery that's dead. Even with the laptop plugged in most models route the power through the battery to smooth out the power and charge the battery.
I'm not sure tho so call 1-800-247-9362 the Dell customer service line and be sure to have the service tag handy. Look on the bottom of your laptop to find the code labeled "Service Tag" should have letters and numbers in it. That's the code that tells them exactly what your computer has in it.

Make sure your computer has plenty of air to the back and bottom. That's where it cools. It will generate the most heat when playing a DVD since that uses most of the RAM and the video card too. Your power supply will get hot. That is normal when playing a DVD. try to get it off the groung or on tile to cool but it's designed to take alot of heat buildup.

Being that the adapter was on the floor, I'm thinking that the laptop itself may have received a shock to the case. I personaly would open the memory compartment and make sure that the chips were seated properly. Other than that take it to an authorised repair shop for a look see. I don't think it is dead.

Sounds like its dead. It could be the power circuit inside the laptop itself. It is prone to overheating, you should get a professional to check. If its still under warranty, get it replaced.
