1. Read the instruction manual.
2. Write down the password to the router configuration menu.
3. Change the default IP numbers and subnets.
4. Enable the firewall on the router, enable firewall on the clients.
5. Regularly check (about 3 months) NetGear for updates on the router bios software.
6. Regularly check the network card maker on the computer for network card updates.
7. Enable WEP, or WPA just one will usually work on the router and client computer. Let the network card software auto-connect for you instead of MS-Windows Services.
8. Disable SSID broadcasts.

The WGT624 router supports WPA in Pre-Shared Key Mode (PSK). The WPA-PSK passphrase is entered in Wireless Settings > Security Options. See What's New in Security: WPA, for an overview of WPA. http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101190.asp

You need to go into your router controls and set a WPA security key. As well, it is suggested not to broadcase your SSID.

Disable it. If you have a storage limit, your immediate neighbours may not ask before exceeding it.
