If my child stole something , this is my punishment:
grounded for 1 month
loss of video game privileges
loss of phone calls from friends or to friends.
grounded to the yard meaning they can go out but not past the fence.
personal apology to the person or store they stole from ..
if they stole from a store? they are banned from ever going in there .

have the cops scare the SH'T out of them, seriously they can throw cuffs on them and let them sweat it out in the back of their car for a while stops most kids that steal cold. Talk to the specific deputy and let them know in advance some states won't do it without actually arresting them but better them get arrested now then when it'll go on a permanent record vs a juvenile one.

Do what my parents did. Punish them for a month. No friends or tv ...all the stuff they enjoy. Make them return it to wherever they stole it from (obviously with you present) and apologize. And also make them pay for it (whether its for the amount it cost. or whatevers in their penny jar, oh and if they have an allowance...thats a good way of paying for something they still cant keep.) It worked on me :)...lol

leave them alone - they know right from wrong, theyre 13. honestly, think about it..13. for an 8 yr old punishment would work. but at 13, maybe disappointment might work. make them return it of course, thats obvious. but they already knew it was wrong to steal, so by punishing them youre only showing them something they knew from the start, not teaching them anything.

make them write an apology letter to the person they stole from, or if its a store then write it to the manager. and make them bring whatever they stole back to the store. OR i know this may sound wierd but you could ask them what they are going to do to fix it. this will really make them think about what they did and it will avoid arguing with them because they are making their own punishment, you arent imposing it on them. if they say "i dont know" tell them to go to their room and think about it until they come up with a solution. i learned this technique from a love and logic parenting class.

Ground them until they move out from every thing. Make them do things that they hate like going to church (but make sure they watch them really good) and also embarrass them.

sit down, talk to him, and tell him, YOU KNOW. Take it away from him, return it to school, and make him realize his mistake, ..don't force him to apologize, make him realize he was wrong for doing that, and he will apologize on his own. If hes stubborn, he will come to sense, hopefully.
