Grass grows through my weedblock surrounding rosebushes. Using several layers of newspaper under weedblock fabric, then smooth rocks over.

Hi Tonya,
Norman is correct about weeds. They are not selective in where they choose to grow. If you are dealing with grassy weeds, such as bermuda grass or nutsedge, there are a few selective herbicides available that can be sprayed on certain desirable shrubs, etc., without damaging the plant you are not trying to kill. Go into your local Co-op and ask. Or, type in key words to Google. The only weed block fabric that I recommend is made by Dupont. It is spun fiber, so things like bermuda and nutsedge cannot penetrate and weave their roots all through it like they will with woven fabrics.

Sometimes newspaper might actually help the weeds... Also you may use ground cover under your roses to really squize the weeds out, a natural way to help your problem, like Ivy... or the many strong ground covers that are wounderful for getting rid of Weeds...

There is a fabric weedblocker, available at Lowes and Home Depot. You can also use mulch, lots of it. Buy it by the large bag. It breaks down and adds to the soil, like a compost.

it dose not matter what you use newspaper, multch,or weed mat, they all can only reduce not completly stop weeds,as wherever you have soil,or a growing medium, and moisture, weeds are going to grow, there seeds can be blown in the wind, allso transfered by birds and insects,so no matter what you use to control them,it will minimise not stop them completly,if you pull any weeds that do germinate before they flower you will eventully have very few,but weeds are very good survivors, happy gardening
