1) 2001 - 1968 Stanley Kubrick - Still the champ; ideas and execution still amazing

2) Star Wars - 1977 George Lucas - (The first one, now called A New Hope) Lucas reinvents the entire genre and reinvents special effects. None of the sequels can match the wonder and amazement of the first

3) Blade Runner - 1982 Ridley Scott - Philip K. Dick's vision of futuristic noir wonderfully put on screen

4) War of the Worlds - 1953 Byron Haskin - 1950s science fiction, George Pal style. Still THE invasion movie (Spielberg should have paid attention)

5) La Jetee - 1962 Chris Marker - 28 minute short masterpiece about love, loss, memory, and time travel, The inspiration for 12 MONKEYS, this is the one to see. If Proust wrote Science Fiction, it would be this.

6) Metropolis - 1927 Fritz Lang - Still visually stunning, although it doesn't make a lot of sense any more - German Expressionism at its most grandiose height.

7) The Day the Earth Stood Still - 1951 Robert Wise - The Christ symbolism is a little heavy handed, but this still remains the best first contact story. Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal are excellent, and then there's Gort, the best movie robot (sorry, R2). Klaatu barada nikto!

8) A Clockwork Orange - 1971 Stanley Kubrick - Anthony Burgess's dystopian view of the future interpreted by the maestro. - 35 years later it's still provocative, disturbing, and original

9) E.T : the Extraterrestrial - 1982 Steven Spielberg - The other great first contact story; yes it's part fantasy, part fairy tale, and part juvenile adventure; it's also legitimate SF and one of the best movies about children ever made.

10) Forbidden Planet - 1956 Fred MacLeod Wilcox - Yes, we all know it's Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST put in outer space. It is also Space Opera at its very best, and the basis of Star Trek (although Roddenbery would never admit it.).

Honorable Mention (tie)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 1977 Steven Spielberg
The Day the Earth Caught Fire - 1962 Val Guest

Spielberg's optimism or Guest's gloomy vision of nuclear stupidity. Both will grab your mind and not let go.
