Ethnicity is about traditions.
Race is about genetics.
We often blur them, because people who historically lived in a geographical area often share both tradition and genetics.
Genetically, most things are a spectrum, and so grouping people by race is really pretty artificial. Nature doesn't really distinguish this way.
When it comes to traditions we often share or borrow them. So separating groups this way also doesn't work very reliably.

I work in social research. My experience shows that Hispanics like to consider themselves a separate race, not to be classified with whites, blacks, etc.
If f this is true all over the Hispanic communities, then it is their wish and should be respected
In response to all the confusion in the previous answers...
Whites are considered to be of European and Middle Eastern ancestry.
Blacks of sub-Saharan African ancestry
Native American, of course, ancestry in the Americas
I am not sure of the Asian and Pacific islander breakdowns.
Hispanics are racially mixed and can be very Nordic-looking or darker than the darkest African. But, as noted before, probably enjoy being considered as one race. The same goes for a lot of Blacks living in Arab societies. They consider themselves Arabs, not black.

Hispanic is an ethnic designation, not a true racial designation. Actually, Hispanic people are considered to be Caucasian. Just another variety of white so to speak.

of direction, i comprehend him... each and every Armenian and each Turk ought to comprehend him... He replace right into a genius, with a incredible skills for getting to grasp languages...He even knew turkish language extra clever than the uncomplicated turkish citizen... My opinion is that he's an emblem of what armenian subculture gave to turkish subculture...Turks and Armenians found out lots from one yet another, approximately sciences, litterature, track, shape, carpets artwork, cooking,etc... he's the appropriate occasion for peace,as a cultural bridge, with the aid of fact he merits to be widespread by making use of the two Armenians and Turks... i do no longer think of that reconciliation is accessible quickly,regrettably...yet i desire sometime Armenians and Turks would be waiting to take a seat down at comparable table, a minimum of to have a verbal substitute... No element needs to pay attention different element...yet they ought to undergo in suggestions the two that truly they have extra uncomplicated factors than modifications... i comprehend it truly is confusing, with the aid of fact the two aspects feels he's insulted by making use of the different element, and the reminiscence of ineffective people is a few thing serious... perchance in some years, if all of us has braveness and sincerity...

I never understood why there is a "also of hispanic origin" on a census form. Like, you can be white and "also of hispanic origin" or black and "also of hispanic origin" ,etc....and yet there is no other multi-racial category. That just baffles me.

Separated from whom? Everybody is separated. They are separated by national borders, by cultural differences, by languages, and by vast oceans. (The Mexican-American family upstairs is separated from me by the ceiling. ~G~)
Do you think that color of skin is what SHOULD separate people? Not all people with the same skin color are the same.
Ethnicity means that you SELF-identify as belonging to a group. So if some people self-identify as "white" and some self-identify as "Hispanic" that is what separates them ethnically.
But I would hardly think that Scottish-Americans from Appalachia would identify themselves ethnically with Armenians, either.

You would have to elaborate on exactly what you mean by separated to be able to give a good answer. I think it truly is more of a country of origin issue than just skin color.

Its just racism, I'm white and I'm very dark too. Its wierd to me that some folks who are considered black are whiter than me. Very very strange thinking happening in some cases. Just boils down to basic racism I think.
