They can be asking about something big, like a break-up or something little, like a hair-style.

Hell yes!!! I always ask if they are sure they want the truth because I am a very blunt and truthful person. I don't see the point in being dishonest. Honesty is the best way to be and the people who know me the best, know that I tell nothing but the truth. Those who can't handle it, just need to hang around fake people because I don't have time for that crap in my life. And frankly, neither should they. They should be happy that someone who truly cares for them, cares enough to tell them truth instead of a lie!!!

Well It all depends upon your age, experience and the person who is asking and the person who is responding, whether in a group or alone, whether at a time when you are in a hurry to capture a flight or leisurely, the impact of the answer on the person and his then mood, the impact of the answer on the person responding.
If the wife is asking the husband how tastey the special item prepared by her for husbands birthday ,the husband has to pay a rich tribute if it really top class, if not say it is tastey, well prepared or prepared with great care(mind you you are not rating the item but saying the trouble taken but that pleases her)and if really bad you can say "Yes it is good May be you could have added this too etc etc "and avoid saying BAD.This ensures your evening good time with your wife.
When you are in a hurry to capture a flight and hardly left any time and if you wife asks whether the dress is OK or she should change over, definitely you are not going to suggest that she change it even if you really feel so.
When a boss asks a subordinate, when a girl friend asks a boy friend , definitely you can expect some praise worthy nodding approval replies only and not honest opinion.May be some may even mislead his boss, so that he cuts a sorry figure , and thus his revenge on the boss is fulfilled!!!
My friend used to say when I am on a highway and at odd place and odd hour and there is only one tea shop and it is pouring cats and dogs and am in need of a cup of tea and I find the tea not to my taste still I would say HI MISTER THE TEA IS REALLY HOT(What I meant was it was no good, not to be called a tea, no milk, excess sugar, no tea decoction and watery)In otherwords
the only praise worthy thing in that tea was IT WAS ATLEAST HOT NOT DAMN COLD (since it was raining something hot was wonderful)
At times telling the truth is not going to find favour with that person.
He may retart and hit back "It is my misfortune I asked your opinion. You are always jealous of me, you are negative minded
You shut your bloody mouth etcetc) Some ask you but then snub you.
Some might suggest then you spare your dress to me!!!!

So you have to be tactical in your answers and this comes out of your age and experience and after burning your fingers once or twice and getting nose cuts(snubs) few times.

First answer... NO ... Lie every chance you can!

I guess it depends on WHO is asking and why. I usually give the absolute honest answer. Case in point... my wife asked me if she had somthing in her teeth. I said yes. She appreciated it. Then another time she asked if I would mind if she got her hair cut. I said, "what ever makes you happy." That was the truth, even tho I like long hair. (she didn't get it cut too short that day)...Then the big one came... "does this make me look fat"... I had to say yes. But not in a "yes" kind of way. I asked her first.."what do you think"... then she said she thought so. That was the Green Light.

Well it depends sometimes you can tell them the truth if it is necessary but if it is on a hair style or something like that you should lie an less its a friend or a family member.

It depends on the person and if they REALLY want to know the answer..... but usually yes, because I try to be an honest person and I don't like lying. Also, too many people lie... so I figure I should give my two cents, especially if asked for it.

It depends on who your talking to, what your after and what your opinion is. If your honest opinion will keep you from getting what you need, I would lie, if you want it, maybe tell the truth, If the person will go out and commit suicide over you answer, lie!

Yes. They ask me to be honest because it matters to them. And when someone is speaking on something that matters to them, it's alsways best to reciprocate in kind.
But if I think it might hurt them a bit, unless they are people who require you to be cruel to be kind, I might temper my words to get the message through to them kindly and gently.

It depends: If the honesty will hurt them, then i am just not honest; if I honestly agree, then i will be honest

Always, and the people that know me realize that they don't need to ask that anymore. So do many people that don't hang around me anymore.
