Janis Joplin was a drunk and a drug addict and an Incredible Singer. Don't think she was a practicing lesbian but she wasn't very popular with the boys. For all of her tallent she had a very humble outside appearance. Doen't mean she was a lesbian but she was bisexual. Probably a "try" sexual... will give anything at least a "try." After all, that was the era of "love."
"Janis Joplin: Although Janis Joplin did not self-identify as bisexual, she did have relationships with both men and women." (http://lesbianlife.about.com/cs/famouslesbians/l/blfamoslesbians.htm)

No, she REALLY liked men way too much. But oddly enough she's a lesbian icon beause she was a loud, and strong woman. Granted her hard way of living got the best of her way too soon.

What does it matter if she was?
Some people may have seen her as one, but who knows.
