Define Abide

Abide means "to stay" with the connotation that one is remaining because one has chosen to stay, either because the state is pleasant, or because one has decided to put up with it with the inconvenience of the state or locale. Here is the poem (lyrics actually, by Anne Murphy) that popped instantly into mind when I saw the question:

"Constantly abiding, Jesus is mine;
Constantly abiding, rapture divine;
He never leaves me lonely, whispers, O so kind:
“I will never leave thee,” Jesus is mine.

"Abide" means remain or stay; to reside. In Literature it means to wait for; to endure or tolerate. To "abide by," is to act in accordance with; to submit to or agree to.

I write poetry and use this word quite often.

There is an old hymn called "Abide With Me": Abide with me, fast falls the evening tide. The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide.........."

We are asking the Lord to stay with us through the evening and into the darkness of night.

Good luck with your poetry and God Bless.

It means to follow, as in rules.

It also means to tolerate (I cannot abide animal cruelty).

And it means to reside (I abide in Canadia)

live. Abide with me means live with me. If you can't abide something, it means you can't stand it.
