"Right wing nut job!"

"Damn liberal commie!"

Why have these phrases become so commonplace?

What ever happened to moderation?

Im a registered Republican (for the record, Im conservative on fiscal issues and moderate on social issues) and Im outraged with the behavior of Republicans and Democrats alike.

Why is it that a pro-choice Republican or a tax-cut supporting Democrat has a snowball's chance in hell of being nominated by their party for an important position?

Having said that, who is your favorite moderate politician and why?

I have two, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rudi Giuliani.

What say you?

Wonderful! I agree 100%!!!! It's scary to think that a moderate Republican wont be elected in the red states and a liberal democrat will...well, just not be elected... But, I think John McCain is a great Senator, and I think that Governor Pataki of NY is a great moderate Republican, who like us, is fiscally conservative and socially more moderate than most!! Rudy G. is good too, but I don't really know what his aspirations are or the reason for them.

Great question!

In the last few years its all been about party loyalty and not about whats best for the country. If you come right down it, the majority of people in the country are moderates. Its just that now its more about "talking points" and less about discussing issues rationally.

Too many people don't educate themselves on the subjects their arguing about and simply parrot what they hear on cable news or talk radio. Its amazing to me that you can't even bring up any social or political issue with friends or co-workers without someone getting irate.

If this trend continues, the chances of the U.S. ever getting back to being a great nation again are VERY slim.

Bill Clinton is my all-time favorite politician, because he was compassionate to the plight of the less fortunate, was fiscally responsible and was admired by all but the far right extremists. Plus he had a GREAT sense of humor and could laugh at himself.

I'm with you totally. More republican then democrat, more conservative on fiscal issues and foreign issues, more moderate on social issues. I also think the Dems play politics way more and pose no real solutions, just rhetoric. I agree with your choices there and even offer you a moderate and very sensible Dem, Lieberman. Collin Powell is pretty middle of the road too.

The primaries are dominated by the radicals in both parties and if you do not play to them you have no chance of getting your parties nomination. Hopefully time will cool the rhetoric on both sides and allow the moderates to re-emerge. My favorite is Arlen Specter.

Moderates are the new left-wingers. Everybody who doesn't support those people in power are left-wingers. Prochoice Republican? No, dear, not anymore: you're a crypto-Democrat lefty.

The moderates are out there but they don't make for good news. That is why you don't hear much out of them.
