Online banking is a great and convenient banking product. I would not bank with a bank that did not have the service. Nothing online is 100% safe, but banks go through extensive Safety and Soundness examinations all the time by the regulators. It is as safe under commercially accepted standards as it can be.

I also believe that the end-user (you and me) have some responsibility for security as well. We as users, must keep our Windows operating system current and fully patched. Windows, no matter what version, is full of security holes that are of no fault of the bank. Additionally, users must maintain a current anti-virus program on their P/C and a good, tight firewall program like Zone Alarm. Also, there is no substitute for a strong password that has numbers, uppper and lower case characters, and symbols that is of a good length. There are some nice random password generators out there that can help you generate a good, strong password.

Also, banks must follow Reg. E that governs electonic funds transfers, so if for some reason there was something bad to happen, as long as you notify the bank within two business days of realizing that there is a loss, you would be covered.

As safe as a regular bank. Banks normally use the same type of networks online as they do in regular branches. If you're worried so much about security avoid it any online transaction altogether otherwise with enough security on your computer and reputable bank you have nothing to fear (advantage of an online bank is that it pays a lot more interest than regular banks--up to 5% for savings with no minimums or fees). Good luck!

I have used it over 10 years in New York City. I am still using HSBC, Citibank, Chase Bank, and Ford Interest Advantage (just type in these names on Google.com to search for their web site). I have also used other out-of-state internet banking services, such as the American Express Centurion Bank, and others. They are all reliable and efficient, never has any safety problem with me. Among them all, it's always better to use the online banking service of a brick and wall actual bank located on the street. Just be aware of the bank that you have never heard of, or phony bank web sites which try to steal your personal information by posting a fake web site. Before applying for such account, you should always double check their real tel phone number and real web site address by checking your local directory or calling the free 800 directory (800-555-1212).

So far, after comparing with so many online banking services, I would recommend you to use the Citibank Online service along with their regular EZ checking account (only $1500 minimum combine balance) and their eSavings Account which gives you 4.75% of interest (APR) with no minimum balance requirement.
You can go to : http://citibankonline.com

Their online banking service gives you instant balance update on their web page. Whether you are making Bill-payment (make payment to utilities or credit cards account), transfer (between your linked credit cards and all other citibank accounts), you will see the result right away. The other banks web page are either slow, very limited options, terrible web page design, or taking 2 or more business days to see the new balances online.

I dont use online banking. When I need to check my checking accnt, I do it over the automated phone system. Between direct deposit, and auto pay, a bank visit is quite rare.

I Do use online to keep an eye on my credit card. Primarily to ensure no unreasonable charges pop up.

It is good in that it is a convenient way to keep track of your checking and other bank accounts (which can be difficult for most of us) and even pay your bills (no stamps!) whenever you like, but it is bad in that you really should visit your bank in person once in a while and get real people to help you. Sometimes it is better to ask advice or get help in person.

I love online banking. It saves time and postage. I can pay all my bills in a matter of minutes where it used to take an hour.

I love it. In addition to being able to make money transfers and pay bills any time I want, I can also see when a check has been cashed, monitor and transfer money into my linked credit card if I'm close to maxing it out, look up within seconds the last time i made a payment.

Since I'm one of the people who toss and turn at night with money worries, its helpful to be able to just go to the computer, check on something and then be able to go to sleep afterwards.

I love it! It is fast and easy for paying bills and for keeping track of your finances. The security has never been an issue for me - the Banks offer secure websites, and I take precautions to avoid problems (updated firewall, anti-virus, etc.) and will never go back to banking the old-fashioned way. Try it - you'll love it!
